NICK MACHTELL, DVM
Dr. Nick Machtell is an owner. He graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Rhonda, and their 3 kids, Chantel, Kayla, and Taylor. In his spare time he enjoys hunting and woodworking.
CRYSTAL MAGENAU, DVM
Dr. Magenau spent her grade school years in Manvel, ND and then moved to the family farm at Hamilton, ND in ‘92. She attended undergraduate school at NDSU and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and a minor in Chemistry. She went on to attend Iowa State University and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2008. Dr. Magenau worked at Petcetera Animal Clinic in Grand Forks from 2008-2013, but always missed Fargo after leaving NDSU. She was then offered a position at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Magenau and her husband, Luke, share their home with their son Jameson, dog, Shelby, and their cat, Xander. She enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, watching movies, reading, relaxing.
CLAY SERIGHT, DVM
Dr. Clay Seright is originally from Granville, ND. He attended NDSU for undergraduate studies and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Seright enjoys Bison Athletics, hunting, fishing, and photography.
KELLY BIRCHEM, DVM
Dr. Birchem is from Hankinson, North Dakota. She attended undergraduate school at NDSU, then received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 2001. Before coming to Southgate Veterinary Hospital, she worked at a mixed animal practice in Fargo and at the Red River Animal Emergency Clinic. Dr. Birchem enjoys spending time in the country and visiting family and friends.
THERESA FAKLER, DVM
Dr. Fakler is from Alexandria, MN. She did her undergrad at NDSU and Veterinary school at the University of MN. She has two cats (Carmyle and Suzie) who are almost identical and a Scottish Terrier (Wallie). Her favorite things to do outside work is hanging out with her husband (T.J.) and son (Theodore). They enjoy watching Netflix, biking and playing board games. She also enjoy running dog agility with Wallie, downhill skiing and cross country skiing. She has a fondness for the short-legged long back dogs and always appreciate being told when there is a corgi puppy in the clinic.
LISHA, LVT, PRACTICE MANAGER
Lisha grew up in Watertown, SD. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from NDSU. She had been the Practice Manager at Southgate Veterinary Hospital since 2004. Lisha and her husband Mark have two sons, Alex and Hudsyn; and an assortment of animals. Outside of work she enjoys photography, stained glass, cheering for the NDSU Bison, and volunteering for the Alzheimer’s Association and the Red River Valley Lacrosse Association.
ALISHA, LVT
Ali graduated from NDSU in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology. She has worked at Southgate Veterinary Hospital as a Licensed Vet Tech since September 2006. At work, Ali enjoys spending time educating and getting to know our clients and their pets, and working in dentistry, surgery and our laboratory. When Ali is not at work, she enjoys reading, bringing her daughters Ashlyn and Ella to their various activities, watching movies or Netflix, and spending time with her boyfriend Chris, Chocolate Lab Hazel, cats Dax & Steve, and other family and friends.
AMANDA, LVT
Amanda graduated from NDSU in 2010 with a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Technology. She came to Southgate Veterinary Hospital as an intern and got hired shortly after. She enjoys dealing with animal behavior issues and surgeries. Amanda loves spending time with her family: husband Jessy, daughter Avery, and son Greyson. When she is not enjoying family time, she enjoys going to movies, browsing Netflix, camping, fishing, baking, and cooking. She has 2 Pit bull mixes named Harley and Rush.
SHELBY, LVT
Shelby graduated from NDSU with a degree in Veterinary Technology and a minor in Zoology. She is a certified scuba diver and hopes to someday swim with the whale sharks. Shelby enjoys taking her corgi, Lucy, for walks and snuggling with her cat, Abby. She’s an amazing baker, likes to read and is super crafty. Shelby joined the Southgate team in March 2016.
RYAN, LVT
Ryan grew up in Marshall MN, and moved into the F/M area in 2009. He was offered to do his internship at Southgate and accepted a permanent position shortly after graduating from Globe University with a degree in Veterinary Technology in March 2017. Ryan and his wife (Carol) have three sons Zane, Rylan & Isaac. He also has an english setter named River and a parrot named Eva. Outside of work Ryan enjoys spending time with his family, camping, fishing and watching movies.
AMANDA, CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE FRONT DESK
Amanda attended NDSU for Veterinary Technology and joined the Southgate team in September of 2014. She works in customer service and also as a veterinary assistant. Amanda has a passion for animal rescue and she volunteers for 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. She has two rescues of her own; a “super mutt” named Sawyer and a cat named Haul-E, and often has a foster dog that crashes on her couch while it’s waiting to find its forever home. In her spare time, Amanda loves hanging out with family and friends, doing anything artsy or crafty, and spending time outdoors doing anything from mountain biking to snowshoeing.
TERESA, CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE FRONT DESK
Teresa’s passion for animals began as a very young girl, often dragging strays (not necessarily domesticated!) home with her. She has one son, Sterling, who has been BMX racing for many years. The past few summers she has spent traveling the country racing nationally for Redline – a team out of Minneapolis. Sparkle, her sweet little Maltese, now has friends in every state. Sparkle is the “twinkle” in their eyes and has both of them wrapped around her tiny paw! Teresa enjoys pet sitting in her spare time, including teaching basic training to dogs and helping with behavioral issues. She loves riding horse, kayaking, swimming, tubing, and reading. One of the first things she noticed when she started working at Southgate, is that everyone is as genuinely crazy about animals as she is. They treat every patient that comes through the door as if they were their own; and that is how she knew she was in the right place.
ALEXA, VETERINARY ASSISTANT
Alexa started as Veterinary Assistant at Southgate in April 2018 and has loved every minute of it! She graduated from MSUM with a BA in Psychology in 2016 and hopes to pursue a degree in Veterinary Technology in the near future, with aspirations to combine the two areas of work. In her spare time, Alexa likes drawing, crocheting, embroidering, photography, and is currently dabbling in raising carnivorous plants.
