Dr. Magenau, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Crystal Magenau spent her grade school years in Manvel, ND and then moved to the family farm at Hamilton, ND in 1992. She attended undergraduate school at NDSU and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and a minor in Chemistry. She went on to attend Iowa State University to receive her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2008. Dr. Magenau practiced in Grand Forks for six years after graduation, but returned in 2013 after missing the Fargo-Moorhead area, where she accepted a position at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Magenau and her husband, Luke, share their home with their two children, Jameson and Madison. She enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, watching movies, reading, and relaxing.
Dr. Seright, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Clay Seright is a veterinarian at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. Having been in veterinary medicine since 1995, he has dedicated himself to providing the highest quality care for his patients and their owners. He completed his undergraduate degree at North Dakota State University and obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University, fostering a solid foundation for his passion for animal health.
Dr. Seright’s commitment to excellence is evident in his personalized care for each patient and client. He takes great pride in ensuring the well-being of his furry patients and believes in keeping pet owners well-informed and involved in their pet’s healthcare journey. Outside of work, Dr. Seright indulges in various hobbies that allow him to appreciate the beauty of nature. Whether hiking, capturing picturesque moments through photography, or traveling to National Parks and scenic areas, his love for the outdoors shines through.
Dr. Fakler, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Theresa Fakler is from Alexandria, MN. She did her undergrad at NDSU and Veterinary School at the University of Minnesota, having graduated in 2017. She has two cats (Carmyle and Suzie), who are almost identical, a Scottish Terrier (Wallie), and a Corgi (Eva). Her favorite thing to do outside work is to hang out with her husband and children. They enjoy watching Netflix, biking, and playing board games. She also enjoys walking Wallie and Eva, downhill skiing, and cross-country skiing. She has a fondness for short-legged long-back dogs and always appreciates being told when there is a corgi puppy in the clinic.
Dr. Machtell, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Nicholas Machtell is a highly experienced veterinarian. Having been in the vet industry since 1989, he has earned a reputation for providing quality care to his patients. Dr. Machtell obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University, setting the stage for his life-long commitment to animal health and well-being.
Dr. Machtell’s passion for his profession shines through his special interests in surgery and internal medicine. He enjoys interacting with pet owners daily, ensuring they feel well-informed and at ease throughout their furry companions’ treatments. Beyond the clinic, Dr. Machtell embraces various hobbies, including hiking, photography, wood-working, rock hounding, and gardening. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Rhonda, and their three kids, Chantel, Kaylah, and Taylor.
Dr. Birchem, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Kelly Birchem is from Hankinson, ND. She attended undergraduate school at NDSU and then received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 2001. Before coming to Southgate Veterinary Hospital, she worked at a mixed animal practice in Fargo and at Red River Animal Emergency Clinic. Dr. Birchem enjoys spending time in the country and visiting family and friends.

Ali, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Ali graduated from NDSU in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology. She has worked as a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Southgate Veterinary Hospital since September 2006. At work, Ali enjoys spending time educating and getting to know our clients and their pets and working in dentistry, surgery, and our lab. When Ali is not at work, she enjoys reading, bringing her daughters, Ashlyn and Ella, to their various activities, watching movies or Netflix, and spending time with her dogs (Hazel and Bowie), cats (Jasper and Emmet) and other family and friends.
Amanda, LVT
Amanda graduated from NDSU with a degree in Veterinary Technology in 2010. She takes great pride in her ability to read her patients well, showing exceptional empathy and understanding when they are in pain or feeling anxious. Her dedication to accommodating their needs and making them comfortable during their visit is a testament to her caring nature. She enjoys interacting with pet owners in the exam room, discussing treatments, and ensuring they are well informed and at ease. One of the most rewarding moments for Amanda is witnessing the happiness of pets when they reunite with their owners after surgery. Beyond her professional life, Amanda cherishes time spent with her husband, Jessy, and their two children, Avery and Greyson, along with their beloved Pitbulls, Griff and Rogue. Together they enjoy family activities like watching movies, playing board games, baking, and creating precious memories.
Shelby, LVT
Shelby graduated from NDSU with a degree in Veterinary Technology and a minor in Zoology. She is a certified scuba diver and hopes to swim with whale sharks someday. Shelby enjoys snuggling with her cat, Fig. She’s an amazing baker who likes to read and is crafty. Shelby joined the Southgate team in March of 2016.
Ryan, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Ryan grew up in Marshall, MN, and moved to the F-M area in 2009. He was offered to do his internship at Southgate and accepted a permanent position shortly after graduating from Globe University with a degree in Veterinary Technology in March 2017.
Ryan and his wife, Carol, have three sons, Zane, Rylan & Isaac. Outside of work, Ryan enjoys spending time with his family, enjoying the outdoors, camping, fishing, and spending time with his pets.
Allison, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Allison is a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. She has been in the veterinary field since 2019, including three years as a Veterinary Assistant and one year as an LVT. Allison brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to her role. Her passion for animal care led her to pursue her education at North Dakota State University.
Allison takes immense pride in her work, especially when it comes to assisting pets with orthopedic issues and procedures. Her compassionate nature and expertise help these furry companions return to their usual, happy selves. Outside of the clinic, Allison finds comfort in spending quality time with her two cats, Vince and Skunk, snuggling up together on her couch.
Alyssa, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Alyssa is a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. Having been a technician since 2020, she has honed her skills to provide exceptional care to furry patients. Alyssa’s dedication to her profession led her to pursue her education at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.
Alyssa takes immense pride in her ability to listen to clients’ concerns attentively, ensuring that their pets receive the best possible care. Her compassionate and empathetic approach makes pet owners feel valued and reassured. Beyond her professional commitments, Alyssa spends time with her Golden Retriever, Huey, and embraces her love for the outdoors, often engaging in activities like playing tennis.
Taylor, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Taylor is a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. Having been in the veterinary industry since 2017, she has honed her expertise to provide top-notch care to every patient and their devoted owners. After graduating from North Dakota State University, Taylor’s academic background has fueled her passion for animal health and well-being.
Taylor’s dedication to her profession shines through her commitment to individualized care. She takes immense pride in educating pet owners about various aspects of their furry companions’ healthcare and finding the best ways to manage their well-being. She also takes a special interest in orthopedics and rehabilitation. In her free time, Taylor enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her hobbies include crocheting, reading, and engaging in training activities with her dogs, exploring agility, tricks, and scent work.
Lindsay, LVT
Lindsay has been dedicated to her profession since 2011, having graduated from the Minnesota School of Business. Her pride lies in implementing the Fear Free approach, prioritizing a safe and low-stress environment for the animals she cares for.
In her free time, she enjoys crafting, reading, and spending time with pets & family.
Jenni, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Jenni embarked on her veterinary journey in 2020 and is an alumna of NDSU. She takes immense pride in fostering strong relationships with her patients and their human counterparts. She dedicates her free time to cherished moments with her family. Additionally, she finds joy in coaching roller derby, hitting the slopes for snowboarding adventures, and embracing the outdoors through hiking and biking pursuits.
Bailie, LVT
Bailie entered the field of veterinary medicine in 2020 after studying at the Colorado Academy of Veterinary Technology. She prides herself on her attention to detail, ensuring that pet parents feel heard and have all their questions answered. Bailie’s goal is to provide the best experience possible for both pets and their owners during each visit.
Outside of work, Bailie loves spending time outdoors—whether she’s horseback riding and roping, hiking, fishing, or camping. She also enjoys quality time with her friends, family, dog, and boyfriend, and is always excited to learn new line dances.
Molly, LVT
Molly attended North Dakota State University and has been working in veterinary medicine since 2016. She takes pride in being gentle, calm, and thorough. In her free time, she enjoys running, karaoke, playing volleyball, thrift store shopping, and relaxing with family.
Emma, VT
Joining the field of veterinary medicine in 2022 after studying at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Emma is committed to treating each patient as if they were her own, providing the best care possible. She has a special interest in surgery, where she takes pride in keeping animals comfortable and well cared for during their stay.
In her free time, Emma enjoys spending time outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. She also loves reading, spending quality time with family and friends, and playing with her dog.

Lisha is the Hospital Manager and a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. With an impressive 23-year journey in the veterinary industry, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role. After graduating from North Dakota State University, Lisha’s academic background has laid a solid foundation for her commitment to animal welfare.
Lisha finds immense joy in her work. Her passion shines through leading and supporting her amazing team. Their collective efforts make every day enjoyable and rewarding for her. Outside of the clinic, Lisha’s world revolves around her beloved family, both human and furry. Together, they have discovered the joys of camping, relishing the opportunity to escape the hustle of day-to-day life and create cherished memories while spending quality time together.
Customer Service Representatives
Amanda, CSR
Amanda attended NDSU for Veterinary Technology and joined the Southgate team in September 2014. She works as a Customer Service Representative. Amanda has a passion for animal rescue, and volunteers her time at 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. She has 5 cats and 1 dog. In her spare time, Amanda loves hanging out with family and friends, doing anything artsy or crafty, and spending time outdoors doing anything from mountain biking to snowshoeing.
Teresa, CSR
Customer Service Representative
Teresa’s passion for animals began as a very young girl, often dragging strays (not necessarily domesticated!) home with her. She has one son, Sterling, who has been BMX racing for many years. The past few summers, she has spent traveling the country racing nationally for Redline – a team out of Minneapolis. Sparkle, her sweet little Maltese, now has friends in every state. Sparkle is the “twinkle” in Teresa’s eyes and has her wrapped around her tiny paw! Teresa enjoys pet sitting in her spare time, including teaching basic training to dogs and helping with behavioral issues. She loves riding horses, kayaking, swimming, tubing, and reading. One of the first things she noticed when she started working at Southgate is that everyone is as genuinely crazy about animals as she is. They treat every patient that comes through the door as if they were their own, and that is how she knew she was in the right place.

Customer Service Representative
Marion has been a Customer Service Representative at Southgate Veterinary Hospital since 2022 and has made a positive impact on both clients and their adorable furry companions. Marion firmly believes everyone deserves respect and consistently offers assistance with a warm smile and a positive attitude.
Marion finds joy in interacting with the patients at the clinic, delighting in their adorable faces. Outside of work, Marion nurtures her love for knowledge through reading and listening to podcasts. She also enjoys exploring the beauty of nature across the country.

Customer Service Representative
Ashli embarked on her journey in veterinary medicine in 2021, nurturing a deep passion for delivering exceptional care to clients and their beloved pets. As a client service representative, Ashli takes pride in extending warm greetings to clients and their furry companions at the front desk. As an appointment assistant, she finds satisfaction in working directly with patients, contributing to diagnostic processes, and facilitating their treatment. Ashli cherishes her free time with her daughter and animals outside the clinic, enjoying the outdoors, attending concerts, and exploring new travel destinations.

Alexa, Veterinary Assistant
Alexa is a Veterinary Assistant at Southgate Veterinary Hospital. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role since she’s been a part of veterinary medicine since 2018. Alexa has a BA in Psychology from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Alexa takes great pride in her attention to detail and her unwavering dedication to ensuring the comfort of her patients during their stay at the clinic. In the spring of 2023, she was awarded a scholarship to pursue her Veterinary Technician degree at Penn Foster. As one of only 25 employees nationwide to receive this scholarship, she is excited to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician and further enhance her skills and knowledge. Outside of work Alexa enjoys playing instruments and dabbling in textile crafts.

Witnessing the recovery of animals after illness brings her immense satisfaction.
In her free time, she likes to play and stream games, as well as read and draw. And when she’s not occupied with these activities, she’s often foundtaking cute pictures of her cat.
